This key messages guide is designed as a template to help National Societies and their partners to support national development of consensus-based key messages for public awareness and public education for disaster risk reduction (DRR). They can also be used as a benchmark against which knowledge and action outcomes can be assessed.

The guide is based on a global study of consensus-based key messages for DRR, and a global IFRC consultation workshop. It provides a framework and structure of messages designed for selection and adaptation using a participatory process.

The key Messages themselves begin with those for all-hazards household and family disaster preparedness and cover 6 sets of hazard-specific messages on: drought, earthquakes, floods, pandemics, tropical cyclones, and wildfires.
